How To Clean Tile Grout

Different Solutions For Cleaning Tile Grout

Today Carol asks :

Diva, how do I go about cleaning existing grout? Is there a how to clean tile grout for dummies? Thanks!

This a multi tiered question because it depends on what type of grout cleaning is needed.

For everyday cleaning, use a grout cleaning product specifically labeled for grout cleaning that uses no harsh chemicals. Stay away from any products that suggest you reseal after cleaning.  I suggest using a grout cleaner brand that is eco friendly or made by a manufacturer of grout.  Because both of these will be safe enough to use without damaging the sealer on your grout.

How To Clean Tile Grout

For stubborn stains, use a heavy duty cleaner or grout stripper.  Please note: this is a heavy duty cleaner and you will want to use gloves and ensure proper ventilation. Using a heavy duty cleaner or stain remover will give you a better chance at removing stains that have had a chance to set in and will not come out with an everyday cleaner.  Remember to completely rinse the entire area you are cleaning afterward to make sure the grout lines do not look splotchy.

For stains that will not come out with the above cleaning methods, recolor or reapply grout.  There are several products out there that you can paint on or apply to the grout that will color the entire area and may act as a sealer as well. Most come in an applicator or require you to use a paint brush. These are effective methods of changing the grout color but will need to be reapplied every year or so.

Another option is to use a premixed grout and reapply over the existing grout.  This only works if 1/16″ to 1/8″ of the old grout has been removed.  If the grout is old and has been worn away, perfect! If not you will need to remove some of the grout yourself.  Then reapply new grout.

If none of the above options work for you, consider going with a grout cleaning company.  They will come out and take care of it for you.  Some companies will also reapply or recolor grout for you if the stain will not come clean.  A grout cleaning company is not cheap, but considering how labor intensive this process can be, it may be worth it to save your time in the long run.

As you can see there are many different ways to answer the question “how to clean tile grout.” The grout cleaning just depends on what you need to clean off the grout and how far you are willing to go to have clean grout lines!
