Recently I painted a kitchen island with new Behr Premium Plus Ultra paint. I’m always skeptical of new types of paint so I figured that using it on a small area would be a great test. That way I hadn’t committed to a whole room without knowing what I was getting myself into.
The Pros: It is a low VOC paint and I could hardly smell it. Great if you have someone who is sensitive to smells or has allergies. It covered pretty well considering I was painting an unfinished light wood surface. It seemed like there was less “thin” areas. It only took me 2 coats to make sure the whole thing was covered top to bottom in a nice even coat which is a great accomplishment considering I was using a very dark color.
The Cons: This is more a reflection of my decision making skills then the paint’s, but because I was using an unfinished wood the paint looks a little less shiny in a couple of areas because of the wood grain. This may have been remedied if I choose to use another coat. In hindsight because the island was unfinished I would probably use a primer first and then paint over it even though the paint boosts paint and primer in one. Also this Behr paint is a little more expensive then the regular Premium Plus.
All in all I would definitely use the paint again. And I think that it would be great on walls and other finished surfaces!
