Premixed Grout

Considering The Pros And The Cons Of Premixed Grout

Today Trish asks;

Dear Diva, Is already mixed and ready to use grout as good as the old-fashioned mix it yourself kind?  I’m tiling my kitchen backsplash with Bondera.  Please advise!

Well Trish, like everything else in life, there is no right or wrong answer to this question. Both types of grout are good! Personally I think already mixed or premixed grout is a great time saver.  That said, it is not something I would use in really wet areas where water will pool.

Since the premixed grout is ready to use and stays wet until exposed to air for a set period of time, it has to have latex and other chemicals added to it so that it can have the shelf life needed to sit on store shelves.  Because of these extra additives you don’t want to expose premixed grout to areas where water will pool or overly saturate the area because those chemicals will be reactivated and then your grout will never dry!

For those wet areas you would want to mix old-fashioned grout yourself.  This may not be the easy way, but it will definitely be the right choice for the long run. And make sure you seal that grout when your done!
