The Budget Approach To A Suspended Shelf

I am always looking for new ideas and projects and I ran across this DIY project to create a suspended shelf.

Now don’t get me wrong, creating a suspended shelf is a great idea. But if you scroll down towards the bottom of the above linked page, you’ll see that the brass chain is $60 a yard!  Yes that is right $60 for 3 feet!  That’s outrageous!  The chain for that shelf would cost a minimum of $120 and that is only if you have 8 foot ceilings and hung the shelf at 5 feet high.  What if you have 10 foot ceilings or hung the shelf at 4 or even 3 feet high?

You can see where I am going with this. You could spend over $200 just on the chain to hang your $15 IKEA shelf.  That seems a little imbalanced to say the least!  You could get the same look for much less.

So let’s look at Plan B, aka the “keep some money in your wallet” plan.  Instead of buying the insanely priced chain, you go to your local hardware store and pick up some regular chain there.

It doesn’t matter what color you get because we are going to change that later. So you’ll probably spend under $20 bucks. Then you go to the spray paint aisle and you pick up some metallic finish spray paint. Now is also the time to choose whatever color you like. You don’t have to have brass you could stick with a nice silver metal or even use black. Whatever you choose, it will cost you around $8.

Okay let’s add that up $20 + 8 = $28!  Now that sounds more like it.  You’ve saved yourself a minimum of $92!  Just by making a regular chain the color or finish you want it to be.  And now you’ve got almost a $100 to spend on other projects!
